More than 20 years helping children and adults become confident readers. Orton-Gillingham trained since 2003 and EBLI certified.
From Orton-Gillingham to speech to print
Laurel began her career as an education assistant in the school district, where she worked with students who were bright and capable but could not crack reading. She wanted to know why, and how to help.
In 2003 she trained in Orton-Gillingham through the Learning Differences Centre of BC, and in 2004 she became an interim Tutor Associate with the Canadian Academy of Therapeutic Tutors. For years she taught Orton-Gillingham and Barton Reading and Spelling, and her students made real progress.
She also saw where they stalled. Students carried dozens of rules and exceptions, spent a long time in controlled readers, and waited at each mastery level before moving on. For students who already struggled with memory, the load was heavy.
In 2023, after studying reading science and linguistics, Laurel began moving to speech to print, which starts from the sounds of spoken language and teaches reading, spelling and writing together. She completed her EBLI certification in April 2026. Today she leads Brilliant Futures Tutoring, teaching students online across Canada and the US and in person in Prince George.
